‘Dardhyatabhakti Rasamrut’ written by the 18th century immortal poet Ram Das is a popular book. The biographies of how many devotees have been discussed and how they have gained the closeness of God through strong devotion are its living subjects. There was a time when the scripture was very close to the Bhagavad Gita of Jagannath Das Goswami, a devotee of the popular religion. It was recited daily in every Oriya family like Bhagwat. Attracted by its popularity, it is also known that someone from the neighboring state of Bengal has translated it into Bengali in the past. The book, which once rose so high on the ladder of popularity, is now ignored by educated Oriyas.Have you read ‘Dharityabhakti Rasamrut’? – This question I have asked some highly educated friends. Excluding reading, some of them have also revealed that they have not heard the name. I have been familiar with this book since childhood. As a child I had the opportunity to read a few small books and myths in our home. ‘Daryatabhakti Rasamrut’ was one of them.
Even though I am now immersed in worldly chaos, I read from chapter to chapter when I get some time.An inexplicable excitement plays through my body as I read; The eyes are deceived. It is truly unfortunate that many modern and highly educated Oriya readers do not taste juice from such a priceless book. With the proliferation of novels, short stories, etc., what could be the reason why modern readers are moving away from this book, written in Nabaksari verse and approaching Jagannath Das’s Bhagavata in terms of popularity? When a brief and prose version of it is published, I am engaged in the transformation of its prose, with the feeling that the modern reader will turn a blind eye to it; I don’t know how successful my efforts and intentions will be.
